Why Shouldn’t We Hire You
Authors: David Endress and Ronald Venckus
This book was written for the many job seekers who are in serious need of
learning how to prepare for upcoming job interviews. The perceived need for this
book is that the authors, experienced human resources experts, believe that
many job seekers, although possessing the skills and qualities to perform a job
well, simply lack the skills necessary to interview well. Many of these
interviewees are like "fish out of water." Put another way, while capable of
performing the job for which they are applying, they do not "measure up" in the
one area that will help them obtain that job — the all-important job interview.
The authors, superbly recognizing this void, have written a readable, no-
nonsense, user-friendly, plain speaking book on the job interview process and
how to make it totally successful.
The methodology highlights the importance of learning all about the prospective
employer and analyzing how the job seeker’s background, skills, and
accomplishments will meld for the betterment of the company. Fortunately, this
book goes far beyond generalities. It gives "how to" specifics in every important
category. The "do’s and don’ts" are easy to follow and guaranteed to reduce the
anxiety of the interview process. As the authors counsel the reader, the
interviewee will be "empowered with enough knowledge that there is no way
you can mess this up."
Virtually all of the potential problems in the interviewing process are discussed
and solutions provided. The book skillfully addresses such issues as poor
references, the loss of several jobs in a short period of time, the inexperienced
interviewer who is totally into herself, the desire to blame others for the loss of a
recent job, and one’s own perceived negative personality traits, just to name a
few.
Special emphasis is placed upon helpful techniques which will be very helpful to
the job seeker who is facing an interview. One is the SARB format, developed by
the authors. Situations, Action, Results, and Behaviors are the keywords to help
one’s personal analysis of previous work endeavors and personal behaviors. This
concept is bound to help in organizing how to handle an upcoming interview.
Another technique recommended to the reader is the preparation of a Briefing
Book which is an informational compilation of the results of an in-depth study of
the company.
Another concept propounded is FAB, the authors’ acronym for the concept of
the interviewee as the truly worthwhile candidate for the job. Focusing on
Features, Advantages, and Benefit to the company will aid in organizing the best
traits that may land the job.
The authors stress that preparation for the interview is essential. Convincingly,
they dispel the notion that the job interview is anything but the primary focus of
the employment search process. The failure to recognize that principle will pretty
much guarantee failure in the search for the right job. Helpfully, every aspect of
the actual interview is covered in this book. One’s odds of a successful interview
are likely to be greatly enhanced by a careful application of the common sense
principles expressed in Why Shouldn’t We Hire You. As a "must read" guide, this
book will give its readers — at all ends of the job-seeking spectrum — the ability
to stand out positively in any job search interview.
