The Writers’ Café was launched in 1997 as an editorial service. As we saw more
and more writers frustrated with traditional publishing houses, we began to
brainstorm ways to assist them. Many of the books edited were written by talented
as-of-yet unpublished authors and we felt their frustration at breaking into the
market.

Because so many manuscripts that we read and consulted on had such great
potential, The Writers’ Café decided to move into the independent publishing
realm.

An independent publisher is very similar to a traditional publisher in that it pays
authors for the right to print and sell their books. The major differences are that 1.
small publishers work with all their authors, instead of concentrating 90% of their
efforts on the bestsellers, and 2. authors can directly query us, no agent
necessary.

Other differences:

  • we want author input about cover art, typeface, titles, production etc.
  • we do everything we can to help promote our author’s books and expect
authors to put their heart into marketing as well
